Children, prejudices and
discrimination
The 4th
International Conference of ‘Children First’
Stockholm – Sweden
October 6 - 7, 2006
Discrimination and inequality are not merely titles to address a
particular injustice or a lack of right, but rather distinct
characteristics of the unjust “civilized” world of today - a
world where children suffer most from its systematic
discrimination and constantly crumble under its wheels.
Children
face discrimination because of their parents’ background, their
social and economic standing, ethnicity, culture, religion etc.
Hardship and horrors of wars are most heavily felt by children
and poverty takes its main victims from them. To the ruthless
and greedy market forces whose interests are solely higher
profits, children are profitable preys. Insignificant and
curable diseases kill children in their millions every year.
Starvation, work-related injuries, religious, national and
political conflicts, and cuts in basic social provisions take
the lives of children continuously.
Much of
such discrimination and lack of rights is excused by making
human rights relative. In the heart of Europe, children with
non-European background are being treated with different
standards. Migrant children are deported to their own
birth-lands to be “corrected” by their parents without any
serious reaction from their schools, police, and social
authorities. Under the banner of religious freedom, the
traditional and religious parents are permitted to trample on
children’s rights and enforce their religious values, rules and
sexual standards in the small world of children.
Children
of the world, everywhere and in all continents, these little
victims of discrimination, must have our most resolute support.
We must stand against such inhumane world-order. This
discriminatory, anti-child world is not worthy of living, and
must be changed in favor of children.
‘Children First’ is an international campaign and holds annual
conferences in defence of children rights. This year, the 4th
conference, titled ‘Children,
prejudices and
discrimination”,
